Two Masters

Summary
Typically, this parable is referred to as “The Dishonest Manager,” but the manager isn’t only described as “dishonest.” The master in the story calls him “shrewd.” What makes him shrewd? A couple things: First, he recognizes his situation, his failings. Second, he uses the resources available to him wisely, making friends for himself. The Pharisees in our story are criticized for their failure to do the same. They spent all their time justifying themselves, making themselves look good. They neither see their own failings nor love their neighbors. When we look at our own hearts, do we, too, try to justify them? Or do we, like the “Shrewd Manager,” make friends for ourselves by means of “unrighteous wealth?”
